The recent events in Thailand with the Red shirt protests and involvement of some of the Thai monks doesn’t surprise me. I have long held the view the most of Thailand’s Buddhism is in shambles mixed with too much rituals, worshipping and brahmic practises. There are outstanding teachers and well respected teachers of course, but they seem to be the except nowadays despite Thailand proclaiming itself to be a Buddhist nation.

Some of the monks donated blood and some even led the procession to splash the blood at gates after chanting some mambo jumbo. I must declare that this is not a Buddhist practice and neither is this something that should involve any monastics or even anyone who call themselves Buddhists. First of all, the ritual is not a Buddhist practice that I ever heard of and is probably not encourage within Buddhist teachings. Secondly, what kind of mind do we grasp when we donate blood for such an event? Is the mind peaceful, compassionate, loving or generous? And lastly, I have heard the some of the blood are tainted or could have infection, this is probably the greatest wrong doing. Splashing tainted or infected blood can bring about harm to other and even oneself, something that is strongly discourage in Buddhist teachings.

Some monks joined the Red protests and some monks claiming to be “neutral” stay with the Red protesters as sort of a spiritual support, I believe. Personally, I have not issues with people protesting, but when protesters acts like thugs, stopping business and causing fear, than its really an act of terrorism, no more a peaceful protests. Why are the protesters rights greater than those of the hotel and shopping center business that were forced to close down because of them? Further more, the existences of the Red camp allows extremists elements to join them, either by invitation or by faking to be part of Red, to allow them to kill, harm and injure people on the streets. How can any monk who have take the vow to uphold the Buddhist teachings of love, compassion, kindness and peace even be part of such a procession?

Whether they are neutral or not, being part of the Red camp, one is becomes partly responsible for all the lost of business, chaos and killings in Thailand. This I know is not any teachings of the Buddha and is not what monks vows to upkeep when they join the monastics.
